Swimfan (2002)
"Swimfan" goes wrong in all the would-be right places. Billed as a psychological thriller, it has no deeper understanding of a true psychological thriller beyond the small imaginations of its PG-13 teenage audience. Here's the setup: High school swimming team champ (Jesse Bradford) has a fling with the new girl in town (Erika Christensen). He breaks it off; she takes it badly. The film doesn't trust its actors or the audience to convey or understand danger, suspense or true evil. During a scene where Christensen becomes unhinged, we actually hear the sound of a hinge opening. To further prove the point, the scene is splintered with multiple angles of our villainess, all piled together as if she's splitting apart inside. Just dumb. At least Christensen is fun to watch. C-
