The 2008 horror film "The Strangers" delivers on the fear and suspense, despite its genre cliches of the core couple splitting apart during a crisis and the woman hiding from the killers in a closet -- with see-through slats.
Based on a true story, but I'm sure garnished with more suspense and gore, the film follows a couple (Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman) as they are terrorized in a house by three masked, silent home invaders.
Just under 90 minutes, the film's first hour is pure chill as the killers slowly and methodically drive the couple mad. When those genre cliches start coming fast you again wonder if it's true: That people in horror movies have never before seen a horror movie.
The film's kicker comes from the killers, two woman and a man, who almost never speak and are never fully seen. They're like ghosts out of child's nightmare with their almost cartoonish disguises. At one point, Tyler's victim begs of her stalkers, "Why us?" The sullen, bored and young female voice replies, "Because you were home." Scary stuff. B
